“Ten Beers Deep”
I was getting ready to leave my house to go on the first date with the woman that would become my wife and was chatting on the phone with a friend. I told him about my pending date that evening and he wished me luck. I joked and said “Man, if things don’t work out for me this time, I’m turning to loose women and booze.” He replied, “There’s a song in that”.
The ride over the mountain to Lynchburg took me about an hour and a half. I thought about what he said and began writing the first few lines. The narrator in “Ten Beers Deep” is someone who has been through a series of failed relationships and tries to cope by walking a path of self-destruction with alcohol and promiscuous women.
He knows how it’s going to turn out, but he tries anyway.
“You’d think that I would know
This is the way it always goes
When I walk around with my heart on my sleeve”
Heartbroken, he tries desperately to do anything he can to move on.
“I’m doing anything I can
To get your taste out of my mouth
But there ain’t enough women in the world
There ain’t enough women in the world”
It’s not the most uplifting song but I think it’s a feeling that many people can relate to. Being rejected in any way, whether it be romantically, professionally or socially can make for a rough time. I think people deal with
this in different ways. Some of those remedies are healthy and some aren’t. The unhealthy path will always lead to more negativity like the narrator experiences. It’s a vicious cycle that’s hard to break and one that I wanted to capture in this song like so many songwriters before me.
